Penobscot River Walkway
One of the coolest things about the city of Bangor is the Penabscot River that meanders through the city.
The city has capitalised on the allure of the river by creating a paved pathway for walking - or jogging or skating or riding.. Or if you’d prefer, you could claim one of the benches that dot the pathway and just enjoy the scenery, do some people watching or munch on some of the fare offered by the food trucks around the area.
Visit Stephen King’s Home
Did you know? The famed author of horrors, Stephen King has a home in Bangor, Maine. King’s fans would get a kick out of visiting his neighbourhood. Although it’s a private residence, you can stop by to take pics of the home with its unique wrought iron fence and cool wood carving on the lawn.
Some fans have even been lucky enough to have a chat with King by the gate on occasion.
Cole Land Transportation Museum
A visit to the Cole Land Transportation Museum will transport you back in time to Maine’s early land transportation equipment. The exhibits feature farm equipment, fire engines, motorcycles and bicycles, snowplows and rails, as well as military vehicles from World War 2.
But the coolest thing about this museum is the fun scavenger hunt. When you enter, you receive a card with a list of things to find as you explore - it’s fun for the entire family.
Penobscot Theater Company
What’s more classic than dinner and an evening at the theater? The Penobscot Theater Company is a non-profit that produces excellent quality plays and musicals throughout the year.
You’ll be completely drawn in by the realistic sets and awesome performances of the actors.
Mount Hope Garden Cemetery
Okay… what kind of person would even want to visit a cemetery in the first place?
Trust us on this. It’s one of the oldest garden cemeteries in the country and it’s beautiful. Guided tours are available but you are free to walk around and explore the scenery for yourself.
If you’re bringing the kids on your trip, you must stop at Maine Discovery Museum. This children’s museum is highly interactive with lots of exhibits designed for kids to learn while having fun. Youngsters would love the multi-story tree fort that they can climb… be prepared to be asked to visit again and again.
Maine Discovery Museum closed temporarily due to COVID-19 but is scheduled to reopen in February 2022.
Paul Bunyan Statue
In case you’re unfamiliar, Paul Bunyan is something of a national folk hero. Featured in many folklore stories, according to the lore, Bunyan was a lumberjack with superhuman powers.
At 31 feet high, Bangor boasts the largest statue of Bunyan in the US… and some would say it’s the best rendering too. We say it’s worth a quick drive by and photo op on your trip to Bangor.
